Area briefs: protestors pack Athens City Hall, Clarke Co BOE meets in special session

Athens-Clarke County Commissioners held their final meeting of the year last night at City Hall, with Commission chambers crowded by protestors holding signs calling for a cease fire in Gaza. The demonstrators called on Commissioners to approve a resolution opposing the Israeli resistance to Hamas terror attacks.

Today is Reading Day at UGA, the traditional day of study before tomorrow’s start of fall semester finals. University of Georgia students wrapped up fall classes Tuesday.

A special called meeting of the Clarke County School Board is set for this afternoon: the closed-door executive session starts at 4:30 in the School District’s central office on Prince Avenue.

There is a heads-up from the Georgia DOT for drivers on I-85 northbound today and again tomorrow: crews are installing beams between exits 160 and 164 in Franklin County.

The University of North Georgia, citing what are as-yet unspecified maintenance issues, says it will close the swimming pool on the UNG campus in Gainesville: a permanent closure begins on December 16.

A man from Hoschton has posted bond and is out of the Hall County jail after allegedly shooting at a construction worker. It happened outside Michael Miles’ home in Hoschton. The construction worker was not injured. The 58 year-old Miles faces charges that include aggravated assault and obstruction.
