Area briefs: SEC meetings in Destin, bicycle talk in Athens

Georgia Bulldog football coach Kirby Smart is among those taking part in SEC meetings that are underway in Destin Florida. One of the major issues up for discussion is the Conference football schedule and whether teams will play eight Southeastern Conference opponents, as is the case now, or expand to play nine each season.

Bicycle talk is on tap for today in Athens, with the monthly meeting of the Athens in Motion Commission. The Commission that is looking to enhance bicycle and pedestrian traffic in Athens meets at 4 o’clock at the Government Building on Dougherty Street.

The Georgia Court of Appeals will determine whether opponents of a planned $5 billion electric vehicle factory will have to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to continue their zoning and permit lawsuit. Critics of the Rivian plant that will go up on two thousand acres along the Morgan-Walton county line have gone to court to block construction of the facility that is projected to employ more than seven thousand workers.

The Sheriff’s Offices in White and Banks counties say they are receiving reports of scam artists pretending to be law enforcement officers, telling those they call that they are facing warrants and need to make on-line payments to avoid arrest.

A Stephens County couple is arrested on drug charges. Leonardo Steeple is 45 years old; Aija Wilson is 38. Cocaine and marijuana were found after a traffic stop in Jackson County and a search of Steeple’s home in Toccoa.

Police in Lavonia want the City Council in Lavonia to sign off on funding for new dashboard cameras for police cars in Lavonia. The projected price tag is north of $20 thousand.

A holiday weekend police pursuit leads to the arrests of a man from McDonough and another from New York: they’re accused of leading Georgia State Troopers on a high speed chase that wound through Habersham and Stephens counties.
