Area briefs: short week of classes at UGA, TAD session at City Hall

Today begins a short week of classroom work at the University of Georgia, with students wrapping up their fall semester classes tomorrow. Reading Day, the traditional day of study before the start of final exams, is set for Wednesday, with fall finals starting Thursday at UGA.

The committee that is looking at plans for a Tax Allocation District for the eastern edge of downtown Athens meets this morning, a 9 o’clock session at City Hall.

There is an evening meeting of the Oconee County School Board, a 6 o’clock session at School District offices on School Street in Watkinsville. Madison County Commissioners meet tonight, also at 6 o’clock, at the County Government Complex in Danielsville.

Today is election eve in Hartwell and Winder, with voters returning to the polls tomorrow to settle runoffs for City Council seats in races that were undecided after municipal elections that were held in November.

The Hall County Sheriff’s Office says three suspects are in custody after a string of drive-by shootings. The Sheriff’s Office in Gainesville says one person was wounded, suffering what are said to have been non life-threatening injuries.

Police in Gainesville were, at last report, trying to find a hit-and-run driver who struck a power pole in Gainesville and left the scene.

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating a deadly vehicle vs pedestrian accident in Habersham County: State Troopers say Mia Alvarez, 21 years old from Mt Airy, was killed when she was hit by a vehicle whose driver left the scene of the accident. The State Patrol was, at last report, still trying to find that driver.
