Area briefs: spring break for UGA students, title game for Titans

Today marks the start of a week of spring break at the University of Georgia: UGA’s offices are open, but the students are out of town until next Monday. There is an evening work session for Oconee County School Board members, 6 o’clock at the Oconee County School offices on School Street in Watkinsville.

There is one final week of early voting in Athens and around the state, with voters casting ballots in advance of Georgia’s March 12 presidential preference primaries. Voters in Jackson County are also voting in a special election for a seat on the Jackson County Commission, and there is a special election for a seat on the City Council in Oakwood. The early voting ends Friday.

The North Oconee High School Titans basketball team will play for a state championship, taking on Holy Innocents in a game set for Wednesday in Macon. The Titans beat Baldwin in a weekend semi-final game, also in Macon.

Madison County Commissioners meet tonight, 6 o’clock at the Madison County Government Complex in Danielsville. This evening’s Jackson County Commission session is also set for 6 o’clock at the courthouse in Jefferson. Oglethorpe County Commissioners convene at 6 o’clock in Lexington.

A man and woman from South Carolina are facing drug trafficking charges in Franklin County: the Sheriff’s Office in Carnesville says 40 year-old Jason Robinson and 41 year-old Dawn Goff were caught with methamphetamine after a traffic stop on I-85 in Franklin County. Robinson and Goff are both from Winnsboro South Carolina; both were booked into the Franklin County jail.

Three suspects arrested so far—accused drug traffickers from Gainesville and Flowery Branch—with more arrests possible: the Hall County Sheriff’s Office says they’re accuse of dealing in marijuana, methamphetamine, and prescription pills. Two of them are also facing illegal weapons possession charges.

The Hall County Sheriff’s Office says 16 dogs have been rescued from what are being called deplorable conditions, taken from a home in Talmo.
