Area briefs: tornado drills in Athens, sales tax dip in Jefferson

Tornado sirens Forsyth County is adding more tornado sirens.

Athens-Clarke County and the University of Georgia are taking part in a statewide tornado warning drill set for around 9 o’clock this morning. The test will include a full activation of the UGA Alert emergency notification system and campus outdoor warning sirens.

The Joint Development Authority for the Athens-Clarke County government and the City of Winterville meets at 5:30 this afternoon.

There is an afternoon meeting of the University of Georgia’s Staff Council. UGA says the virtual session is underway at 2:30.

Sales tax revenues take a bit of a hit in Jackson County: the tax office in Jefferson says collections on a Jackson County local option sales tax dipped from $13.5 million in 2022 to just over $13 million last year.
