Area briefs: Twilight in Athens, music at UGA, GBI probe in Elbert Co

It is Twilight time in Athens: the annual Twilight Criterium bicycle races will bring the world’s fastest high speed bicycle riders to downtown Athens, with activities beginning tonight and the main races set for tomorrow night. Several downtown streets will be closed for the races and the surrounding festivities.

Athens state Rep Spencer Frye joins other Democratic state lawmakers in signing a note expressing what they say are their concerns about what they’re calling excessive force used by Georgia State Troopers in dealing with pro-Hamas protestors who tried to shut down Emory University in Atlanta.

There is music this evening in Athens: the University of Georgia’s combined choirs and symphony orchestra are performing at 7:30 in UGA’s Hodgson Concert Hall.

The GBI says the body of a man reported missing from Baldwin County has been found in Elbert County. Dawson Lee was 24 years old, from Milledgeville. GBI investigators say there is no sign of foul play. An autopsy will be conducted at the state crime lab.

An Elbert County man is arrested on dog fighting charges in South Carolina. 13 people were taken into custody in a raid on a dog fighting operation near Columbia. Suspect Patrick Heard is 45 years old, from Elberton.

There are drug trafficking charges for a woman from Rabun County: Lynda Welch is 41 years old, from Clayton. She’s accused of smuggling methamphetamine. Welch was arrested after a traffic stop on Highway 441 in Rabun County.
