Area briefs: week two of early voting begins, Hall Co teenager drowns

Athens-Clarke County Commissioners meet this afternoon at City Hall: they are again interviewing candidates to fill seats on local boards and authorities. Today’s interview sessions get underway at 1 o’clock.

The committee that is looking at plans for a tax allocation district for the Newton Bridge Road corridor meets this afternoon, 3 o’clock at the Snipes Building on Barber Street in Athens.

University of Georgia students continue today the spring semester final exams they began last week: UGA’s spring graduation is set for Friday.

The University of Georgia’s Georgia Center is the site for UGA’s third annual Georgia Hospitality and Tourism Summit. It’s underway at 7:30 this morning.

A second week of early voting is underway today in Athens-Clarke and Oconee counties, in Athens at the Elections Office on Washington Street and in Oconee County at the Administrative Building on Macon Highway. An Oconee County School Board work session is set for 6 o’clock at School District offices on School Street in Watkinsville.

This evening’s Madison County Commission meeting is underway at 6 o’clock at the County Government Complex in Danielsville. Oglethorpe County Commissioners meet at 6 in Lexington. And Jackson County Commissioners meet, also at 6, at the courthouse in Jefferson.

A Hall County teenager has drowned after a fall at Tallulah Gorge: Exause Kabeya was 19 years old, from Gainesville. The state Department of Natural Resources is investigating.

A man from Alto is charged with assaulting a hospital worker at the Northeast Georgia Health System Center in Habersham County. Christopher Martin allegedly kicked the hospital worker.

62 year-old Russell Clark worked as a guard the Lee Arrendale State Prison in Alto: the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office says he’s accused of sexually assaulting an inmate. Clark was arrested and booked into the Habersham County jail. He has since been released on bond.
