Area briefs: weekend early voting in Athens, Cowsert committee convenes in Atlanta

The first weekend of advance voting for May 21 elections in Athens continues through the weekend, with early voting 9 til 5 Saturday and noon til 4 Sunday at the Elections Office on Washington Street in Athens. There is also Saturday early voting in Oconee County, 9 til 5 at the County Administrative Building on Macon Highway. Early voting continues through May 17.

Athens-Clarke County Commissioners are meeting in a retreat today: a daylong session at the Lyndon House Arts Center on Hoyt Street is underway at 8:30 this morning.

A state Senate committee chaired by Athens Republican Bill Cowsert meets today in Atlanta: the panel is investigating Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and the romantic partner she hired as a special prosecutor in the Donald Trump election interference case.

This is festival weekend in Jackson County: the 45th annual Daisy Festival kicks off this afternoon and continues through tomorrow in Nicholson.

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating this week’s school bus accident in Franklin County: a school bus driver and two students were hurt when a car rear-ended a bus near Carnesville. Injuries were described as non life-threatening, the most serious being a young girl who was treated at Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center for a broken wrist. State Troopers say the driver of the car that hit the bus is facing charges.

A Hall County man gets life in prison, his punishment for his conviction on child molestation charges: Charles Moore is 31 years old, from Flowery Branch. He was also found guilty on child sexual battery charges in a case involving a 9 year-old girl.
