From Spectrum…

Spectrum representatives today presented Athens Community Council on Aging with a $5,000 donation and engaged community stakeholders in a broadband accessibility lunch and learn event at the Athens-Clarke Regional Library.

County Commissioners Dexter Fisher and Tiffany Taylor, and the Athens Community Council on Aging, a nonprofit that serves senior citizens in Athens and Clarke County, Georgia, spoke on the importance of expanding digital knowledge.

“Broadband access is vital – and I’m excited to see the positive impact Spectrum’s donation will have on our seniors and our community,” said state Rep. Houston Gaines. “I know this donation is going to benefit so many individuals here locally.”

The funds will support Athens Community Council on Aging’s efforts to close the digital divide, which includes a partnership with the nonprofit, Senior Planet from AARP, and their Digital Skills Ready@50+ program.

“The Digital Skills Ready@50+ program was designed to help people over 50 learn new online skills,” said Leslie Trier, Director of Programs and Services for Athens Community Council on Aging. “We are proud to have Spectrum’s support as we provide participants classes to develop essential digital technologies, stay connected through online communities and learn about internet adoption resources.”

As part of the program, Spectrum donated four laptop computers to the Athens Community Council on Aging, raffled four computers to program participants and addressed high-speed broadband affordability through the Federal Communications Commission’s Affordable Connectivity Program.

“The Affordable Connectivity Program is an important step in driving broadband adoption in America,” said Catherine Fleming, Georgia Director of Government Affairs for Charter Communications, Inc., which operates the Spectrum brand of connectivity products. “It is an important next step in providing true high-speed connections to consumers who would otherwise continue to face a digital inequality in this country.”

For more information on the Affordable Connectivity Program and to apply online, consumers should visit fcc.gov/acp. Interested consumers should first confirm their eligibility through the National Verifier, then contact Spectrum at 1-877-959-1748 to apply for the credit.
