Athens cyclist dies from injuries sustained in September crash

The Athens-Clarke County Police Department says a bicycle rider who was struck by a car on Prince Avenue in September has died in a hospital in Athens: Carey Maxey was 68 years old, from Athens. The accident happened on September 22 at Prince and Franklin. The driver of the car that hit him was not injured.

On September 22, 2022, at approximately 7:44AM, the Athens-Clarke County Police Department responded to the area of Prince Avenue and Franklin Street for a crash involving a vehicle and a cyclist. Initial investigation indicated that a cyclist, Carey Maxey, 68, of Athens, GA, was traveling east on the sidewalk of Prince Avenue. A 2022 Hyundai Kona was traveling east on Prince Avenue in the inside lane. The cyclist exited the sidewalk in an apparent attempt to cross Prince Avenue. As a result, the Hyundai Kona and the cyclist collided. The cyclist was transported to a local hospital by EMS with visible injuries. The driver of the Hyundai Kona was not injured.

On October 14, 2022, ACCPD was notified that Maxey died as a result of his injuries sustained in the crash.

This is the ninth fatal motor vehicle crash of 2022 in Athens-Clarke County.
