Athens judge named to state council

Athens local — The Council of Municipal Court Judges elects new leadership, some of it from Athens: Athens-Clarke County Municipal Court Chief Judge Ryan Hope will serve as treasurer for the Council.

The Council of Municipal Court Judges Annual Summer Business Meeting and Awards Ceremony was held June 16, 2022, where it conducted its annual summer Law and Practice Update and business meeting. Topics of the Law and Practice Update included Municipal Courts by Honorable Frank Caprio (Chief Judge, Municipal Court of Providence, Rhode Island); Updates on DUI & Caselaw; GMA’s Messaging to City Leadership About Municipal Courts & Sample Contracts and Assessment Tools; “Profit & Punishment: How America Criminalizes the Poor in the Name of Justice” by Mr. Tony Messenger; JQC Update; Animal Crimes and Animal-Related Cases;  Succession Planning/Receiverships and the Poverty Simulator.

Honorable Steve. C. Jones, US District Court for the Northern District of Georgia attended the business meeting as the Council’s guest speaker and administered the oath of office to the newly elected officers.

The Council elected new officers and District Representatives for 2022-2023: President Judge JaDawnya Baker, Municipal Court of Atlanta; President-Elect Chief Matthew McCord, Municipal Court of Stockbridge; Vice President David Will, Municipal Court of Clarkston; Secretary Chief Judge Robert Cowan, Municipal Court of Dalton; Treasurer Chief Judge Ryan Hope, Municipal Court of Athens Clarke County; Immediate Past President Judge Lori B. Duff, Municipal Court of Monroe. District One Judge Joe Huffman and Judge Richard Sanders; District Three Judge Chimere Trimble and Judge Bill NeSmith; District Five: Judge Gary E. Jackson and Judge Roberta Cooper; District Seven: Chief Judge Robert Cowan and Chief Judge Luke Mayes IV; District Nine: Judge Pamela Boles and Chief Judge William Brogdon.
