Members of the Athens area legislative delegation—Republican House members Houston Gaines and Marcus Wiedower and Democrat Spencer Frye, along with Republican Senators Bill Cowsert and Frank Ginn—are in Atlanta for this morning’s opening day of the 2022 legislative session.

The 2022 Georgia legislative session kicks-off Monday, but it will be an unusual first day.

Speaker David Ralston plans to gavel-in the House at 8:30 a.m. – much earlier than the usual 10 a.m. start. Plans are for a few procedural matters to be taken-up, followed by adjournment.

“I anticipate we will have a short business session to dispense with the necessary formalities and then I look forward to visiting another state,” said Ralston.

That’s right. Ralston and likely other fellow lawmakers will be headed for Indianapolis, Indiana for the College Football Playoff National Championship Game – featuring the Georgia Bulldogs’ matchup against Alabama.

“We will then reconvene on Wednesday, both to celebrate the national title and get business underway,” said Ralston.

When the business of the Session does get going, lawmakers want to tackle issues of boosting public safety, expanding gun rights, legalizing gambling, and several cityhood proposals – including Buckhead looking to split from Atlanta.
