Candidates campaign in Athens, Gingrich endorses in Senate race

A candidate for Clarke County Sheriff will kick off his campaign today: Robert Hare is the second candidate to announce for the seat that is now held by Ira Edwards. The Clarke County Sheriff’s Deputy joins Athens-Clarke County Police Sergeant John Q. Williams in the Sheriff’s race. His campaign launch is set for 6 o’clock at the Library on Baxter Street.

6th District congressional candidate Karen Handel is in Athens this evening: Republican Handel will speak at tonight’s meeting of the University of Georgia’s College Republicans. It is a meeting that is set for 6:30 in UGA’s Miller Learning Center.

Former Georgia Congressman and former US House Speaker Newt Gingrich is endorsing Kelly Loeffler in this year’s special election for Senate. Loeffler is facing a challenge from within her own party, as Hall County Republican Congressman Doug Collins says he is a candidate in the race necessitated by last year’s retirement of Republican Johnny Isakson.
