Clarke County School District superintendent Philip Lanoue announced to the Board of Education this evening that he will resign effective March 1, after more than seven years with the Clarke County School District. Lanoue began with the district in July 2009, and was named 2015 Georgia and National Superintendent of the Year during his tenure.

“We appreciate and commend Dr. Lanoue’s tireless and dedicated service to the Clarke County School District,” said Board President Charles Worthy. “His work since 2009 has resulted in much higher student achievement, much stronger community support and a district of which we are all ‘Proud to be CCSD.’ His legacy will be entrenched in his belief that all students can achieve, as well as his strong advocacy for children and his laser-like focus on their achievement. We wish him the best in his future endeavors, and know that he will continue making a difference for all children.”

Under Dr. Lanoue’s leadership, he saw the district’s graduation rate rise from 63.3% to 80.3%, was instrumental in a nationally-innovative Professional Development School District partnership with the University of Georgia, opened the Athens Community Career Academy, provided all students in grades 3-12 with a digital device and saw achievement and innovation grow in a variety of areas – from academics to arts to dual enrollment/career. Lanoue also placed a focus on student wellness, and helped connect over 300 students with insurance, oversaw farm-to-table options in school cafeterias and was a strong voice for connecting individuals with mental health services.

“Dr. Lanoue has built the strongest district leadership team that I have witnessed during my time with the Board of Education,” said Worthy. “I am confident this diverse and talented team will continue their unwavering dedication to educating the whole child, and ensuring all students succeed.”

In full, Dr. Lanoue’s official resignation stated:

It is certainly with mixed emotions that I tender my resignation effective March 1, 2017. During my time here, it has been my honor to lead the Clarke County School District, which is a wonderful and vibrant school community composed of talented support staff, teachers and leaders. These individuals care deeply about our students and work tirelessly to ensure they receive the best educational experience. I do not believe that our students can get a better education anywhere else than here in Clarke County.

While timing of any departure is difficult, I anticipate that with this schedule, the Board will be afforded a time window that will allow an effective process to select the next superintendent, as well as prepare for that transition. This is an innovative district that I know will attract outstanding leaders for your consideration. Please know that I will continue to lead and support the operations of the district and the many instructional innovations in process – thus ensuring a smooth transition.

After 39 years in public education, my plan in moving forward is to take time with my family and explore my many passions about educating children in America. This community is tremendous and has provided me with opportunities to do some of the most exciting work in my career, and I am greatly appreciative and thankful for the opportunity given to me.

Thank you for the support and for all that you have accomplished for the children of Clarke County.

Lanoue shared his letter with employees and parents immediately following the Board’s executive session. The Board will begin putting a timeline together regarding Lanoue’s replacement, as yet to be announced or determined.
