The Clarke County Sheriff’s Office says two detention officers at the Athens-Clarke County jail had to be treated at a local hospital for injuries suffered when they were assaulted by an inmate. The Sheriff’s Office says the inmate at the lockup on Lexington Road fashioned a weapon made out of a sock and attacked a female sergeant, then fought with a male detention officer. The inmate, who was behind bars on an arson charge, will face additional counts stem from the jailhouse fight.

Two Clarke County Sheriff’s Office jail employees were taken to the hospital after they were attacked by an inmate during a cell check.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, on the night of April 21, a female Sergeant was checking Unit 11 at the jail when she was attacked by an inmate serving time for third-degree arson.
The inmate, who has not been identified, had crafted an improvised weapon by molding together several bars of soap and putting them inside a sock.
The inmate beat the sergeant in the head and arms and attempted to steal her stun gun.
A detention officer responded to assist her, but the inmate hit him and knocked his stun gun out of his hand. The inmate then attempted to stun the detention officer.
The sergeant deployed her stun gun, but it was ineffective.
Eventually, several officers were able to restrain the inmate.
Both officers were treated at Piedmont Hospital and later released. The sheriff’s office said there is no timeline for when they may return to work.
The incident is still under investigation.
It’s unclear what additional charges the inmate may face.
