Federal trial underway for 2021 RaceTrac murder suspect

The Federal Trial of Akhil Crumpton is now underway in Athens.

Crumpton was charged in the March 19, 2021 murder of RaceTrac clerk Elijah Wood during Wood’s night shift at the station on Hog Mountain Road. Crumpton was indicted in May of last year on a federal murder charge, but after a court decision that will eventually be heard in Oconee County Superior Court. In his federal trial now underway he faces charges of attempted robbery with the use of a firearm and violating a federal firearms purchase law.

Crumpton is from Philadelphia and played football at the University of Georgia in 2016 and 2017.
