It happened around 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon, near Highway 142 at Adams Circle, officials said.
Sgt. Jack Redlinger with the Newton County Sheriff’s Office said five people died and another one is in the hospital. Investigators said it was a two-car head on collision involving a van and pick-up truck.
“There were five occupants in one of the vehicles, which were deceased on the scene,” said Redlinger.
Right now, they are working to identify the victims involved. Meanwhile, Redlinger said this accident was one of the worst ones he has witnessed.
“We have not had a deadly accident like this with five occupants. It has been pretty devastating for everyone on the scene,” he said.
Investigators said, it was raining when the accident happened, but it is unclear if that played a factor or not. As for the sixth victim, that person is in the hospital in critical condition.
