GBI investigates inmate death in Athens

athens-clarke county jail

The Clarke County Sheriff’s Office says the GBI is investigating the death of an inmate at the Athens-Clarke County jail. A Sheriff’s Office spokesman says the 41 year-old female inmate was found unresponsive in her cell at the lockup on Lexington Road.

Authorities say there is, at this point, no indication of foul play. Her death is believed to be related to a medical issue.

From the Clarke Co Sheriff’s Office…

At approximately 1:45 Saturday morning, during a cell check, jail staff observed a female (41 years old) to be unresponsive and apparently in medical distress. Staff immediately began working with medical personnel to provide aid to the female until EMS responded to the scene.

The female was transported to Piedmont Athens Regional Hospital and later pronounced deceased. The female’s name will not be released until such time that we can be sure the appropriate family has been notified. The Coroner responded to the hospital. The active investigation has been turned over to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
