A new agreement between Georgia Power and OpenAI could eventually mean about $15 a month in savings for the average residential customer as the tech company plans a massive new data center project near Savannah.
The Public Service Commission has approved the agreement, which Georgia Power says will increase projected savings for customers when the utility returns for its next rate case in 2029.
Georgia Power spokesperson Matthew Kent said the projected annual savings have increased from $102 to $180.
“It was $102 back in December of 2025, and now it is $180 thanks to this contract with OpenAI,” Kent said.
That would amount to about $15 a month in savings for the average residential customer starting in 2029.
Kent said the projected savings come from additional revenue generated by large customers such as OpenAI.
“It’s really just an extension on what we’ve been saying this whole time that data centers are paying more so that residents and other rate payers will pay less,” Kent said.
OpenAI is planning a $20 billion data center project in Effingham County near Savannah. The proposal is one of the largest economic development projects in Georgia history.
The facility is expected to become the state’s single-largest electricity user, requiring about 3,200 megawatts of power. That is about the same as the output from three nuclear reactors at Plant Vogtle.
“This is really increasing the savings that customers will see when we go for our next rate case in 2029,” Kent said.
