WASHINGTON, D.C. — Georgia’s two U.S. senators are split on a bill aimed at addressing several issues facing college sports as the measure heads for a key Senate vote Monday.
The Senate is scheduled to vote on the Protect College Sports Act. The measure needs at least 51 votes to officially advance through the Senate.
Georgia Sen. Jon Ossoff supports the measure, while Sen. Raphael Warnock opposes it. Warnock says the legislation does not go far enough for college athletes seeking to make as much money as they can.
The measure would establish rules involving athlete eligibility, transfers and player compensation. It would also put new guidelines in place involving conference realignment and a potential future super conference.
The legislation would be a win for conferences seeking more guardrails surrounding name, image and likeness, or NIL, and transfers.
If the Protect College Sports Act advances through the Senate, it would still need approval in the House.
