Georgia state troopers now accepting digital driver’s licenses

Real ID Georgia

GEORGIA — Georgia drivers can now use their digital driver’s licenses during traffic stops and other encounters with state troopers.

The Georgia Department of Public Safety says troopers have new identity readers that allow drivers to present a license stored in their phone’s digital wallet without handing over their device.

Drivers who want to use their digital license can notify the trooper and hold their phone near the reader to verify their identification.

The technology can also be used during crash investigations and is available to state commercial vehicle officers and Capitol Police.

The change follows a state law signed last year requiring law enforcement agencies to be able to verify electronic driver’s licenses by July 1, 2027.

However, state officials are reminding drivers to continue carrying their physical driver’s licenses because not all police departments can accept digital identification yet.
