GEORGIA — Governor Brian Kemp has declared a statewide State of Emergency for Georgia ahead of a potentially severe winter weather storm expected to bring freezing rain and ice this weekend.
Kemp announced the executive order during a virtual news briefing Thursday morning. The declaration applies to the entire state.
“We’re still expecting a major winter storm to impact much of Georgia,” Kemp said.
State officials say 500 National Guardsmen have been called up and are now on standby as preparations continue.
“We just want to be prepared in case we do that we can move and get General Wilson and his team responding as quick as possible,” Kemp said.
The DOT will begin brining the roads north of I-20 after midnight Saturday and the state operations center will open at 7 a.m. Saturday morning.
The governor is urging Georgia residents to keep preparing for the incoming winter storm as the forecast develops.
