Gym Dogs open sesaon

The eighth-ranked University of Georgia gymnastics team will open the 2020 season at the Critique Classic Invitational in Kissimmee, Florida on Friday, January 3 at 7:00 p.m.

The GymDogs will compete against Bridgeport, Iowa, and Oregon State, beginning competition on bars.

With a clear “Vision 2020” the GymDogs have their sights set and focused at the start of the season. The GymDogs have added depth to the lineup of all events. Georgia returns 11 gymnasts, including 2018 SEC Specialist of the Year Sabrina Vega, and four new GymDogs anxious to make their debuts in Stegeman Coliseum.

Now in their third season, the coaching staff has prepared the GymDogs for added success. Head coach Courtney Kupets Carter (pictured above), who was deemed the best-ever collegiate gymnast, added former Georgia teammate and thirteen-time All-American Katie Heenan Dodson to her staff as Volunteer Assistant Coach.

In the team’s annual “First Look”, the GymDogs were split into Red and Black with four gymnasts competing on each event for both teams. When totaling the top five combined scores the GymDogs scored a 196.575.

Senior Sabrina Vega debuted a brand new bars routine, unofficially competing in all four events for the first time as a GymDog. She led the Black Team and earned the highest score of the night with a 9.950 on floor and followed that with a 9.900 on beam.

Georgia welcomes the LSU Tigers to Athens for the home opener on January 10.
