It was almost left off the ballot: a referendum that would raise the homestead exemption in Athens from 10 to 25 thousand dollars was not placed on the first batch of ballots that were printed for the early voting that starts next week.
Athens state Representative Houston Gaines, who helped pass the legislation that allows for the referendum, says the faulty ballots were recalled and new ballots mailed out in time for absentee voting, early voting, and election day voting on November 8, now 25 days away.
The referendum and the proposed increase in the homestead exemption has been opposed by Athens Mayor Kelly Girtz and several members of the Athens-Clarke County Commission.
