Ibarra brother bond hearing delayed, Congressman proposes Laken Riley Act

Diego Ibarra’s bond hearing, originally set for Monday in Macon, has been pushed back to Thursday. Diego Ibarra, brother of Laken Riley murder suspect Jose Ibarra, was arrested by Athens-Clarke County Police on the charge of having a fake green card. It has been a dozen days since nursing student Laken Riley was beaten to death on the UGA campus. Jose Ibarra, in the country illegally from Venezuela, was arrested the next day. Diego Ibarra has not been charged in Riley’s death.

Athens-Clarke County Commissioners meet tonight, 6 o’clock at City Hall. Commissioners will be asked to approve a package of public safety measures proposed by Athens Mayor Kelly Girtz. The anticipated Commission action comes on the heels of last month’s Laken Riley murder.

An Athens group plans a 5:30 rally outside City Hall: the Make Athens Safe Again rally comes in advance of tonight’s Athens-Clarke County Commission meeting. The call for a tougher stance on crime comes a dozen days after the murder of Riley murder.

Congressman Mike Collins, the 10th District Republican who represents Athens in the US House, says his Laken Riley Act could come up for a vote later this week: the measure would require Immigration and Customs Enforcement to issue detainers for undocumented migrants who are charged or cited with local theft or burglary.
