Kemp kicks off reelection run

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp officially launched his 2022 re-election campaign with a weekend rally and concert at the Georgia National Fairgrounds in Perry.

The event featured the Kemp family, state and local officials, and musician Walker Montgomery.

The kickoff makes the campaign official as Kemp has stated his desire to return to the office he was elected to in 2018.

Several other Republicans have announced they plan on running against him, including former state senator Vernon Jones, former senate candidate Kandiss Taylor, and Jonathan Garcia.

No Democratic candidate has stepped up to announce their candidacy at this time. Stacy Abrams, who ran against Kemp in a very close race in 2018, has not made public her plans for the upcoming political race.

Kemp has drawn some heat in Republican circles for not intervening during the 2020 election or investigating accusations by supporters of former President Donald Trump who lost the state to Joe Biden.

At the Georgia GOP Convention in June, Kemp received both applause and boos by those in attendance.

The vote for the next governor of Georgia will take place on Nov. 8, 2022.
