The state Labor Department is reporting a dip in the Athens unemployment rate: the jobless rate for Clarke, Oconee, Oglethorpe, and Madison counties checked in at 2.7 percent for November, down from 3.3 percent in October. The Labor Department says there were more than 102 thousand people employed in the four-county Athens metro last month.

Georgia Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson said Thursday that Athens recorded an unemployment rate of 2.7 percent in November, down six-tenths of a percent over the month. A year ago, the rate was 2.7 percent.
“As we prepare to ring in a new year, Georgia’s future is bright, said Commissioner Bruce Thompson. “With holiday shopping and retail kicking back up, Georgia’s unemployment rates are dropping faster than holiday deals. Coupled with a soaring job market and a workforce ready to take on limitless opportunities, Georgia is well on the road to success.”
The labor force increased in Athens by 116 and ended the month with 102,420. That number went up by 2,826 when compared to November of 2022.
Athens finished the month with 99,671 employed residents. That number increased by 794 over-the-month and rose by 2,765 when compared to the same time a year ago.
Athens ended November with 103,600 jobs, an all-time high. That number increased by 600 from October to November and rose by 2,600 when compared to this time last year.
In November, initial unemployment claims increased by 71 (26%) in Athens. When you compare November 2023 claims to November 2022, claims were up by 148 (77%).
