GWINNETT COUNTY, GA — A settlement is close in a Georgia teenager’s sex trafficking lawsuit against Uber after attorneys for both sides filed papers agreeing on a resolution.
The lawsuit was filed by a Butts County teenager and her mother. According to the lawsuit, the girl was 14 when a man in Clayton County ordered an Uber around 1 a.m. to pick her up in Butts County.
The lawsuit says the Uber driver did not check the teenager’s identification, verify her age or seek permission from her parents before transporting her.
At the destination, the teenager was drugged and raped over four days.
Negotiations began after a state Supreme Court ruling failed to shield Uber’s CEO from having to answer questions in the lawsuit about human trafficking risks.
Attorneys for the teenager and her mother and attorneys for Uber have now filed papers agreeing on a resolution. A Gwinnett County judge will decide whether to approve the terms.
Attorney Michael Neff said his client is courageous and is on the way to healing. He said parents should continue warning their children about getting into vehicles with strangers.
“I think as parents we need to go back to that old school message because your kid could get into an UBER or left without you knowing about it, and they could be transported to a very bad person, and nobody wants to see that happen again,” Neff said.
