Local briefs: Commissioner organizes clean-up, Friends of Bot Garden hold annual meeting

Jesse Houle is organizing a weekend cleanup in the Sixth District he represents on the Athens-Clarke County Commission. It gets underway at 4 o’clock Sunday afternoon, with volunteers asked to meet at the corner of Tallassee and Lavender Roads in Athens.

The annual meeting of the Friends of the State Botanical Garden takes place today at the Garden on South Milledge Avenue in Athens.

This is alumni weekend at the University of Georgia’s College of Veterinary Medicine: activities take place today at the Georgia Center.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office says the social media threat aimed at Franklin County Middle School earlier this week was unfounded. The Sheriff’s Office in Carnesville did send extra deputies to the school after the threat was discovered.

Sentencing is on tap for today in the case of Tabitha Wood: the 46 year-old Gainesville woman will be in Hall County Superior Court, learning her punishment for the 2022 murder of her 82 year-old fiancé. Prosecutors say she lived with the body for two months before Leroy Franklin’s death was discovered. Wood is looking at a possible life sentence.

A Buford man is in the Hall County jail after his arrest on child porn charges: the Hall County Sheriff’s Office says more than 300 pornographic images were found on Daniel McFalls’ phone. The 27 year-old McFalls was arrested earlier this week.
