Local briefs include scam alert from US Marshals

The US Marshal’s Service is reporting what it says an increase in scam phone calls in the Athens area. Calls are also being reported in middle Georgia, with callers claiming to be US Marshals, looking to get money from the people who answer their phones.

There is still no word from the Clarke County School District on when and where this year’s high school graduation exercises will be held. It won’t be, as had been scheduled, in Stegeman Coliseum. Stegeman is closed until further notice while crews work to repair the coliseum’s ceiling, a big chunk of which fell last week. UGA says now it is the third time in five years there have been issues with the ceiling in Stegeman.

This evening’s Clarke County School Board meeting is set for 6 o’clock at the School District central office on Prince Avenue in Athens.

There is an afternoon meeting of the Athens Downtown Development Authority, a 2 o’clock session at Authority Offices in the Gameday Building on West Broad Street in Athens.

The committee that is looking at plans for a Tax Allocation District for the Lexington Road corridor meets this afternoon, 5:30 at the Athens-Clarke County Solid Waste Facility on Hancock Industrial Way.

The Athens-Clarke County Board of Assessors meets this evening: the session is set for 4 o’clock at City Hall. There is a new CEO for a hospital in Walton County: Blake Watts replaces the departing Larry Ebert as head of Piedmont Walton Hospital in Monroe.

Social Circle is in the market for a new police chief: Police Captain Samantha Rose has been named interim chief in the aftermath of the departure of former Social Circle Police Chief Will Brinkley, who stepped down last month.

The Sheriff’s Office in Habersham County was, at last report, trying to track down Jarrid Carter: Habersham County Sheriff Joey Terrell says the 35 year-old Carter is wanted on first degree forgery charges.
