Local briefs: summer finals at UGA, Food Bank looks to expand

University of Georgia students who took Summer Short Session II classes are taking their final exams today. We are twelve days away from the August 17 start of fall semester at UGA.

The Athens-based Food Bank of Northeast Georgia says work on a new $12 million 64 thousand square foot facility for food storage and distribution should be completed by the end of next year. Funding comes from the Georgia Department of Community Affairs and from private fundraising efforts.

He campaigned earlier this week in Jackson County: Governor Brian Kemp brought his reelection efforts to Franklin and Stephens counties Thursday. Republican Kemp faces Democrat Stacey Abrams in a November rematch of the election Kemp won four years ago. The November 8 election day is now 95 days away.

He is accused of receiving stolen property: the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office says 35 year-old Cody Floyd is facing felony theft charges. Floyd was booked into and has bonded out of the Elbert County Detention Center.

Methamphetamine trafficking suspects from Blairsville and Blue Ridge are arrested at a motel in Young Harris: four suspects in all, says the Towns County Sheriff’s Office.
