Local briefs: tornado warning sirens sound in disaster drill, TSPLOST committee meets

It is only a test: Athens-Clarke County tornado warning sirens are set to sound at 9 o’clock this morning. The local test comes as part of national Severe Weather Awareness Week. The University of Georgia will be activating its emergency notification system as part of the drill.

There is transportation tax talk today in Athens: a virtual session of the committee that is looking at sales tax funded work on the Prince Avenue corridor is set for 3 o’clock this afternoon.

The Jackson County School Board, meeting this week in Jefferson, says it hopes to name a new Jackson County School Superintendent by the end of the month. April Howard says she is retiring at the end of the current school year.

A Barrow County company will be setting up shop in Franklin County: the Winder-based Clinical Laboratory Services says it is expecting to hire upwards of 150 people for its operations in Carnesville. CLS is a reference lab that provides testing services to nursing homes throughout the southeastern United States.
