Local government briefs: Clarke Co School Board meets, Hoschton Council ponders property tax

A week and a day after the start of the new school year in Athens, the Clarke County School Board meets for a 6 o’clock session at School District offices on Prince Avenue.

There is an afternoon meeting of the Athens-Clarke County Board of Assessors, a session set for 4 o’clock in Athens’ City Hall.

The Athens Downtown Development Authority meets this afternoon, 2 o’clock at Authority offices in the Gameday Building on West Broad Street in Athens.

The Elections Office on Court Street in Watkinsville is in the market for new leadership: Oconee County Elections Supervisor Rebecca Anglin is leaving for a job with the Secretary of State.

The proposal for a property tax in Hoschton gets a first public hearing in a session set for 6 o’clock this evening at the Train Depot in Hoschton. Hoschton, which currently has no property tax, could impose one under a plan under consideration by the Hoschton City Council.

The Utilities Department in Winder says it needs $40 million for infrastructure upgrades: they’re looking to replace aging pipes, meters, and water lines. With that will come higher water and sewer rates for utility users in Winder, new rates that kick in on the first of September.

They are hanging out the Help Wanted signs in Barrow County: the city of Auburn holds another jobs fair today, looking for workers for the city’s Public Works Department. The jobs fair takes place from 10 til 2 and again from 4 til 6 at City Hall in Auburn.

School officials in Elbert County say their enrollment figures have returned to pre-pandemic levels. The School District office in Elberton says 3,070 students were in classrooms for last week’s start of the new school year, just shy of the 3,075 students who were enrolled in 2019.
