Local notes: UGA preps for Maymester, Athens high schools gear up for graduation

The University of Georgia’s spring semester is over, with three days of socially-distanced commencement exercises held late last week: registration for UGA’s Maymester classes is set to begin today. The University’s May session classes start tomorrow.

This is graduation week for high school seniors in the Clarke County School District: there are Friday commencement exercises for the Class of ’21 at Cedar Shoals High School and the Classic City High School, with both sets of graduation ceremonies taking place at Cedar Shoals. Clarke Central Seniors graduate Saturday in the football stadium at Clarke Central.

The University of Georgia golf course is closed to the public today and again tomorrow: high school state championships are being played at the course on Riverbend Road in Athens.

There is tax talk this evening in Athens, with the citizens committee that is looking at projects funded by the 2020 SPLOST referendum convening virtually.

There is an evening meeting of the Oconee County Planning Commission: it is a 7 o’clock session at the courthouse in Watkinsville. Jackson County Commissioners meet, 6 o’clock tonight at the courthouse in Jefferson. Elbert County Commissioners and the Elbert County School Board meet this afternoon in Elberton.

Officials in Braselton say they will use state funding to expand the public library in Braselton.
