Malls in Athens, elsewhere reopening

The Georgia Square Mall on Atlanta Highway in Athens, closed for more than a month because of concerns about coronavirus, is scheduled to reopen today. Other malls around north Georgia and metro Atlanta are set to get back into business.

From Andy Peters, AJC…

Southlake Mall in Clayton County will join Lenox Square and several other metro Atlanta malls in reopening on Friday after shutting down for most of the past two months because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Southlake, located in Morrow, will be open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day except Sunday, when its hours will be 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The Mall at Stonecrest in Lithonia plans to open Monday and the Gallery at South DeKalb tentatively plans to open Tuesday.

A spokeswoman for Brookfield Properties, which owns Perimeter Mall in Dunwoody, Cumberland Mall in Smyrna and North Point Mall in Alpharetta, said the company has not determined when it will reopen those malls.

Lenox Square, Phipps Plaza, Mall of Georgia, Town Center at Cobb and other malls owned by Simon Property Group plan to open Friday. Greenbriar Mall in southwest Atlanta and Georgia Square Mall in Athens will also open Friday.

Some of those malls' stores may remain closed, however. Macy's said it plans to open 68 stores nationwide on Monday, although it has not said where those stores are located.

Other large retail centers also plan to reopen soon. Ponce City Market will open in mid-May. Atlantic Station has remained open during the coronavirus shutdown. And some businesses at Avalon in Alpharetta will open on Friday.

Several additional malls in metro Atlanta did not respond to a request for comment or could not be reached. Those were Northlake Mall in Tucker, North DeKalb Mall in Decatur and Gwinnett Place Mall in Duluth.
