The GBI is investigating the third deadly officer-involved shooting in Athens this year: 23 year-old Aaron Hong was shot and killed by police after they say he charged at them with a knife. It happened outside an apartment complex off Macon Highway. One police officer suffered what were described as minor injuries and was treated on the scene.

Sources have confirmed to WGAU that one of the officers involved in Monday's shooting was among the Athens-Clarke County Police Officers who shot and killed another suspect in an officer-involved shooting in late March, an encounter with an armed suspect on West Lake Drive in Athens.

This is the 39th officer-involved shooting this year in Georgia.

From the Athens-Clarke County Police Dept…

Shortly before 12.30 pm today, ACCPD officers responded to the 1000 block of Macon Hwy for a report of a man who was armed with a knife, covered in blood, and acting erratically.

Upon arrival, officers encountered the man who was still armed with the knife. Officers gave numerous commands for the man to drop the knife. However, he disregarded these commands and continued to advance on the officers.

Officers retreated as the man advanced with a knife in hand, and at one point during the encounter, the man charged at an officer. Two officers fired several rounds at the man.

He was treated at the scene by paramedics but succumbed to his wounds and pronounced dead at the scene.

ACCPD is withholding the deceased’s name pending notification of the next of kin.

In accordance with ACCPD policy, the GBI was asked to investigate this officer involved shooting. Also in accordance with ACCPD policy, the involved officers have been placed on administrative leave.
