The new week begins with a new top cop in Athens: Athens-Clarke County Manager Blaine Williams has appointed police veteran Jerry Saulters as the interim police chief, a temporary replacement for the now retired Cleveland Spruill. Williams says he will conduct a national search for the next permanent chief. He is soliciting feedback with an online survey, asking Athens-Clarke County residents what they want in a new police chief. The survey can be found on the Athens-Clarke County government website.

Athens-Clarke County Manager Blaine Williams has opened a survey to ask residents for input through Sunday, April 10 about what they believe should be the characteristics, qualities, and priorities of the next Athens-Clarke County Police Chief.

Former Police Chief Cleveland Spruill retired on March 10 after three years as Athens-Clarke County Police Chief and more than 30 years in law enforcement.

“This survey is designed to give residents an opportunity to provide feedback as to what they find most important to consider in our next Police Chief as we move through the search process,” said Williams.

Feedback can be provided through an online survey form at www.accgov.com/policechief, through printed forms available at City Hall in the Manager’s Office (301 College Avenue, Suite 301) and at the Police Department’s East Precinct / Headquarters (3035 Lexington Highway) during normal business hours, and through voicemail comments at any time by calling 762-400-8333.

All comments are due by the end of the day on Sunday, April 10.

Williams has appointed Athens-Clarke County Deputy Police Chief Jerry Saulters to serve as Interim Police Chief. Saulters has served with the Athens-Clarke County Police Department since 1998 in positions throughout the department. He was promoted to one of the Deputy Chief positions in 2019.

Saulters will serve until a permanent replacement is named after the Athens-Clarke County Unified Government conducts a national search. The process is expected to be completed by the end of 2022.

“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Manager Williams for affording me the honor to serve as Interim Chief of the Athens-Clarke County Police Department during this transition,” says Saulters. “I am excited to provide leadership to the outstanding men and women of ACCPD while continuing to build a modern, community-focused agency.”
