From the Athens-Clarke County Police Dept…

On Sunday, October 14, 2018 at 12:04 pm, our officer was on routine patrol when he spotted a possible stolen vehicle driving in a parking lot at AMC Dine-in Theaters, 1575 Lexington Road. The officer followed the vehicle, a 2013 black Volkswagen Golf occupied by two black males, at a safe distance for several miles. He received confirmation from dispatch that the vehicle was stolen. As the suspect vehicle approached the intersection of Lexington Rd. and Whit Davis Rd., the driver became reckless, crossing over to the left-hand side of the road into oncoming traffic. Our officer activated lights and siren to negotiate traffic and alert other oncoming traffic to the suspect vehicle’s reckless driving. Stop sticks were deployed by another officer at 4680 Lexington Rd, Cornerstone Church, and the stolen vehicle struck them but continued eastbound on Lexington Rd. The stolen vehicle collided with a tree at the entrance to the Athens-Clarke County Landfill at 5700 Lexington Rd. Multiple officers arrived at the scene and conducted a felony vehicle stop. A juvenile wearing a backpack exited the front passenger side of the vehicle and was arrested. Officers canvased the area but could not locate the driver of the stolen vehicle. Officers searched the backpack and found multiple loaded handguns, a small amount of marijuana and miscellaneous items. Officers determined that the handguns were stolen and linked to recent Entering Autos in Athens-Clarke County. A subsequent investigation led ACCPD to arrest the juvenile driver of the stolen vehicle who was linked to an Armed Robbery which occurred later than same day (10-14-18) near Nellie B Apartments. Both juveniles were transported to the Gainesville Regional Youth Detention Center.
