Damage from explosion in Winder neighborhood

Two men are behind bars, charged in the October 2 explosion that damaged homes in Barrow County: windows were blasted out of houses in a subdivision in Winder when an explosive device went off in mailbox. Police in Winder have arrested 38 year-old Royce Van Court and 31 year-old Michael Huff.

The Elbert County Coroner’s Office says a man from Pickens County was the victim of what appears to have been an accidental shooting: Phillip Wilson was 30 years old, from Jasper. The shooting happened this past weekend in Bowman, with a gun going off while Wilson was working on it. An investigation is ongoing.

A woman from Franklin County is killed in a three-car collision in Stephens County: Shonda Hart was 35 years old, from Canon. The wreck happened on the Highway 17 Bypass in Toccoa. No other injuries were reported. The Georgia State Patrol is investigating.

A Lavonia man will spend life in prison after being convicted of murder in the death of a teenager from Toccoa. Kentavius Walker and Demetrius Smith were both tried for the shooting death of 18 year-old Joel Green. A Stephens County jury convicted Walker but acquitted Smith.

The Webster Daniel trial is underway in Hall County Superior Court in Gainesville: Daniel is the former girls’ basketball coach at Chestatee High School. He’s facing charges that include sexual battery.

The Georgia Supreme Court convenes in Atlanta to hear arguments in the case of a Hall County man who was found guilty on child molestation charges. Alejandro Arias is appealing the conviction that was handed down four years ago. He’s serving a 27-year prison sentence. A girl who was 9 years old at the time of the reported molestation is said to have told her brother about it when she was 12.
