The man charged in the May murder of his brother has been ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation: 20 year-old Malachi Downs is accused of stabbing and killing 29 year-old Muniyr Gay and wounding his mother in an attack at the family’s home on Cumberland Court in Athens. A Clarke County grand jury handed up indictments in the case last month.
An Athens man gets a 15-year federal prison sentence: 38 year-old Bryan Little was convicted on drug and weapons charges after his arrest in march of last year. It’s the weapons conviction that lands Little most of his prison time—he was convicted on earlier drug charges in Clarke County Superior Court and was therefore not allowed to have guns.
A half-dozen drug suspects are arrested in Elbert County: the Sheriff’s Office in Elberton says they’re facing marijuana and methamphetamine charges.
Danielsville is in the market for a new police chief: Brenan Baird has submitted his resignation to the City Council in Danielsville, citing what he says are "irreconcilable differences."
A murder trial that was scheduled to start next month in Toccoa has been put on hold because of the announced retirement of Stephens County Assistant District Attorney Rick Bridgeman. Marqueela Hill and William McElvee will now go to trial in November. Hill and McElvee are charged in the death of Tomas Colbert, who was 21 years old, from Toccoa. Colbert was shot in February of 2016; Hill and McElvee were indicted a year later.
Franklin County Sheriff's deputies make another I-85 drug bust, and in the process arrest a man and woman who were wanted on more serious charges out of Florida: Roger Coleman and Stephanie Cahn are facing armed robbery and assault charges stemming from a reported stabbing in Fort Walton Beach Florida.
Two men—one from Winder and another from Flowery Branch—are arrested on theft charges in Hall County: 36 year-old Kerry Esco and 31 year-old Ian Robertson are facing theft by taking charges after allegedly stealing farm equipment. Robertson is also accused of having heroin.
Two children are killed in a crash on Georgia Highway 400 in Lumpkin County: a 2 year-old boy and a 4 year-old girl died in the wreck that happened last night. The Georgia State Patrol says the children’s mother was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville with what were described as non life-threatening injuries.
