The stretch of Creek Hollow Run between New High Shoals Road to Echo Trail in Oconee County was closed through the late night and into the overnight hours after gusty winds knocked a tree onto a power line, causing some power outages in parts of Oconee County. The winds are from the weather system that is bringing rain and high winds to northeast Georgia this morning, the remnants of what was Hurricane Nicole, the Category One storm that made a landfall on the east coast of Florida two days ago.
Schools are closed today in Habersham, White, Stephens, Franklin, and Banks counties amid concerns about heavy rains and high winds kicked by what is now a tropical depression. The remnants of what had been Hurricane Nicole have brought rain to much of the state.
The rain and gusty winds that are in the forecast for Athens and northeast Georgia are coming courtesy of the remnants of Tropical Storm Nicole, which made landfall as a Category One hurricane Wednesday near Vero Beach Florida. The storm left a quarter million Floridians without electricity.
