Oconee Co reports “major” sewage spill

Oconee County Water Resources is reporting a major sewage spill, with more than 20 thousand gallons of raw sewage spilling into tributary to McNutt Creek. It happened near the Tanglewood subdivision in Oconee County. The state Environmental Protection Division has been notified and will test and monitor water at the site of the sewage overflow.

Oconee County Water Resources was notified of a sewer overflow entering a tributary to McNutt Creek near Tanglebook Subdivision, on June 1, 2024, at approximately 10:20 p.m.

The spill was caused by a broken sewer force main which released up to 20,342 gallons, which is classified by the state EPD as a major spill. The spill was contained and the line repaired at 1:30 a.m. on June 2, 2024. Signs notifying the public of the spill have been placed in the area.

In accordance with state regulations, the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) and the Oconee County Environmental Health Department were notified and testing begun for upstream and downstream water quality. Lab results will be reported to Georgia EPD.
