Oconee Co students are named Georgia Scholars

Four graduating seniors from the two high schools in Oconee County are among the 320 from around the state who have been named Georgia Scholars, an honor awarded by the state Department of Education. Saketh Chaluvadi, Brynn Halbach, and Karen Zhao are from North Oconee High School, while Chaim Moore is a senior at Oconee High.

From the Oconee Co School District website…

“Congratulations to these exemplary graduating seniors for their well-deserved recognition as Georgia Scholars,” said Superintendent Jason Branch. “These students have consistently displayed excellence in academics, extracurricular activities, and in the community. In the face of an international pandemic, these seniors – who have been well-supported by their K-12 teachers and parents – persevered and are well on their way to bright and successful futures as leaders of tomorrow.”

Through the Georgia Scholar program, the Georgia Department of Education identifies and honors high school seniors who have achieved excellence in school and community life. Honorees are students who have carried exemplary course loads during their four years of high school; who performed excellently in all courses; who successfully participated in interscholastic events at their schools and in their communities; and who have assumed active roles in extracurricular activities sponsored by their schools. Each Georgia Scholar receives a seal for his or her diploma.

  • Brynn Halbach-North Oconee High School
  • Chaim Moore-Oconee County High School
  • Karen Zhao-North Oconee High School

Said State Superintendent Richard Woods, “As a state, we can all draw inspiration from the resilience and determination of the class of 2021,” Superintendent Woods said. “Like their counterparts in the class of 2020, they dealt with the sudden shutdown of in-person schooling in March of last year. Then they persevered through a school year that was, of necessity, unlike any we have ever seen before – and still, they found a way to excel. I am extremely proud of each 2021 Georgia Scholar and can’t wait to see what this outstanding group of students accomplishes.”
