Park, trail, zoo closures in Athens

The Oconee Hill Cemetery segment of the North Oconee River Greenway is going to be off limits to walkers after 5 o’clock this afternoon today and tomorrow, reopening for regular use at 8 o’clock Thursday morning.

City Hall spokesman Jeff Montgomery says “as part of the agreement with the cemetery for the easement through it, they can ask for closures of that segment (if you’ve been on it, you might have noticed the gates on either end) and asked for the closures during these days/times.”

The Sandy Creek Nature Center on Old Commerce Road in Athens is closing its Exhibit Hall for building renovations. Work that begins tomorrow is expected to continue through Tuesday of next week. The Nature Center itself, along with its classroom, gift shop, and walking trails, remains open.

City Hall says Bear Hollow Zoo in Memorial Park in Five Points in Athens will be closing later this month, a temporary closure for three days starting on May 28 to allow for tree removal.
