Potential environmental concerns are focus of meetings in Athens

The Athens-Clarke County government schedules two meetings for later this month, one on April 25 and the other on the 27, to focus on potential environmental issues along Dunlap and Pittard roads. The Dunlap Road area includes the Municipal Solid Waste Landfill owned by the County, while the Pittard Road site includes land that housed a former privately-operated manufacturing plant owned by a subsidiary of DuPont.

The Athens-Clarke County Unified Government (ACCGov) will host two public meetings in April to share research findings related to potential environmental concerns in the Dunlap Road and Pittard Road areas.

The Dunlap Road area includes the Municipal Solid Waste Landfill owned by ACCGov, while the Pittard Road area includes land that housed a former privately-operated manufacturing plant owned by a subsidiary of DuPont.

A separate meeting in each area will discuss the findings and recommendations for that specific area. The Dunlap Road meeting will take place on Tuesday, April 25 at 6:00 PM at Billups Grove Baptist Church at 5720 Lexington Road. The Pittard Road meeting will take place on Thursday, April 27 at 6:00 PM at New Grove Baptist Church at 1228 Moores Grove Road.

The findings and recommendations for both areas were initially shared with the ACCGov Mayor and Commission at their Work Session on Tuesday, April 11, 2023 and are available online at www.accgov.com/pittard (Pittard Road) and www.accgov.com/dunlap (Dunlap Road).

Environmental Attorney Rebecca Davis with Seyfarth Shaw, LLP will present findings and recommendations related to the specific location area at each area’s meeting. ACCGov staff will also be available to answer questions during these meetings. The director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) environmental justice program for Region 4 will be in attendance only at the April 25 meeting, but information on their programs will be available at both meetings.

In June 2021, the ACCGov Mayor and Commission identified a need and allocated funding to investigate potential environmental concerns in the areas of Pittard Road and Dunlap Road.
