There are road closures in Athens, with a stretch of Oconee Street closed for the better part of the next month: crews will be shutting down Oconee and Foundry Streets at East Broad Street and reconfiguring the five-way intersection of East Broad, Oconee, and Thomas streets to work on manhole adjustments.
Parkview Drive at Winterville Road in Athens could be closed for upwards of three months for culvert repair.

The Georgia Department of Transportation and contractor Vertical Earth, LLC will be working on an emergency drainage improvement project which will upgrade and replace an existing 130-year old culvert near the Farmer’s Exchange building in downtown Athens.
The project requires the closure of Oconee Street and Foundry Street from E. Broad Street for approximately 30 days, weather permitting. There will also be a brief, temporary reconfiguration of the 5-way intersection of E. Broad Street, Oconee Street, and Thomas Street for a manhole adjustment.
The closure will begin in late June, as early as June 21, weather permitting. The total project completion date is September 2023, weather permitting, with an intent to complete the majority of work before August 17.
All lanes (eastbound and westbound) will be detoured. All lanes at Foundry Street (northbound and southbound) will be closed to through traffic. The detours are as follows:
- Traffic headed out of downtown Athens should travel west on E. Broad Street --> south on SR 15 (Milledge Avenue) --> east on the SR 10 Loop --> southeast on US 78 (Lexington Road).
- Traffic headed into downtown Athens should travel west on the SR 10 Loop --> north on SR 15 (Milledge Avenue) --> east on E. Broad Street.
Delays are anticipated. Motorists are encouraged to consider alternate routes.
As of June 16, 2023, Parkview Drive in Winterville between Winterville Cemetery and the Oglethorpe County Line will be closed for the next 45-75 days due to a culvert failure. A detour is in place until repairs or a replacement can be made.
A resident alerted staff to a developing shoulder washout at an existing 42-inch corrugated metal pipe culvert on Parkview Drive in Winterville. Staff investigation determined that the erosion is progressing and the site/road is unsafe and imposes a threat to the traveling public.
The road will be closed while further investigations are ongoing by departmental staff to determine the best course of action. It is expected that repairs or a full replacement can be done by ACCGov in-house resources in 45-75 days, depending on weather and material availability.
