ATHENS, GA — A new scholarship is established in honor of Laken Riley, a nursing student who was killed while jogging on the University of Georgia campus in 2024.
Georgia Southwestern University is creating the Laken Hope Memorial Nursing Scholarship.
The school says nursing students will receive ongoing financial assistance through the scholarship in order to “help ease the cost of their education while honoring Laken’s dream of caring for others.”
Riley went for a run near the UGA intramural fields where she was later killed.
Jose Antonio Ibarra was later charged with malice murder, felony murder, aggravated battery, aggravated assault, false imprisonment, kidnapping, and more.
Ibarra was later found guilty of murder and was sentenced to life without parole.
