Someone went onto a Hall County high school campus and stole a trailer worth thousands of dollars from the school’s marching band.
Channel 2′s Matt Johnson was at West Hall High School, where the community is stepping up to help.
The theft prompted a mixture of frustration and confusion for Katy Wilson-Fields, West High School’s band director when she realized someone stole the band’s travel trailer.
“I don’t know anybody that would steal from a public school,” Wilson-Fields said.
But that’s what the Hall County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
They say someone appears to have come onto the school campus to steal the $5,000 brand trailer the students need to travel to games.
“It was just frustrating to think someone would not consider the needs of our students about their own,” Wilson-Fields said.
Wilson-Fields came to campus Monday to prepare for the upcoming school year and realized the trailer wasn’t in its usual spot behind the band room.
She says no one with access to it had it with them and that’s when she realized the trailer they use to take equipment with them was gone.
“Percussion instruments, electronics, props, anything and everything the marching band has to carry, and that’s a lot of stuff,” Wilson-Fields said.
It was the community last year that raised $5,500 dollars to buy the new trailer after the band outgrew the first one.
Wilson-Fields says they got a donation Thursday morning to cover the costs of a new trailer in hopes of having it before the start of school. She says two community members, Blake and Brittany Poole, donated a check after hearing about the theft.
“What started as a really bad week has turned into a really good one,” Wilson-Fields said.
She’s thankful for the community and looking for ways to prevent another theft.
“We’re going to up everything, our security measures, all that we do,” Wilson-Fields said.
The trailer was locked but thankfully there was no equipment inside when it was stolen.
Hall County Sheriff’s Office says an investigator is looking into the case but there are no updates.
