Sheriffs, DA join AG Chris Carr in anti-gang summit at Athens Tech

State Attorney General Chris Carr convened a meeting of his Anti-Gang Network Tuesday at Athens Tech, pulling together local, state, and federal law enforcement officials to talk about ways to stem the rising tide of gang violence in Georgia.

Carr is pushing Senate legislation that would stiffen penalties for those who recruit children to join gangs in Georgia. He says as many as 90 percent of violent crimes in Georgia are gang-related.

Among those taking part in Tuesday’s event at Athens Technical College were Western Judicial Circuit District Attorney Deborah Gonzalez and Jackson and Oconee county sheriffs Janis Mangum and James Hale.
