Recently there has been an increase in reported scams related to people attempting to purchase UGA football tickets and football parking permits online or through social media apps. We encourage you to take a few moments to familiarize yourself with the information presented in this memo to help protect yourself from falling victim to these efforts.

These scams frequently use social media apps such as GroupMe, focused specifically on the Athens area to advertise the tickets or parking passes. The potential victim is asked to send money in advance of receiving the ticket or pass, and may be asked for proof of their affiliation with UGA. After sending payment electronically, the victim receives an invalid ticket or pass. In addition to the financial loss related to the fraudulent transaction, some individuals have had their personal identifying information used by suspects to attempt to commit additional thefts.

Following the guidelines below will significantly decrease your chances of falling victim to these types of scam attempts:

  • Use caution when purchasing event tickets or other items from unknown third parties;
  • Only use websites or applications which clearly offer purchase protection;
  • Be suspicious when unknown sellers request you to use payment apps that are not a part of a website’s secured purchasing procedure; and
  • Never provide unnecessary information such as photographs of identification documents to unknown individuals.

If you suspect that you have been the victim of such a scam, please contact the UGA Police Department at 706-542-2200 for assistance.
